Thanks to the help of a wealthy entrepreneur, Mr. Hugh Osmond, stem cell bandages are now in human clinical trials.  Quoting Medical Express:

Azellon’s Cell Bandage has been designed as an alternative to the current treatment of surgical removal of the meniscus (meniscectomy), a procedure that more than 1.7 million people around the world per year are estimated to undergo. This common orthopaedic procedure often results in the early onset of osteoarthritis, leading to further joint surgery including total knee replacement.

Busted by DNA Dog Poop?

A story that is both smelly and for the dogs was picked up by Yahoo Odd News earlier this month. While I have a long history in property management, I did not allow pets but can easily relate to this problem.

“Dog friendly” apartment complex manager, Deb Logan, is using tech to police dogie do. In an effort to fairly enforce and fine violators, dogs are “registered” with her by swabbing the canine’s mouth for saliva and then the DNA is used to create a “PooPrint” which is also the brand name for the testing kit.

Abandoned piles can then be matched to the dog and owner responsible for the droppings. The violating pet’s owner is then fined 100 dollars per offense. If they fail to pay, she begins the eviction process. In my humble opinion, this seems like a rather fair solution.

This one has the bees falling out of the sky and I can not resist to jest, rather in involves the “birds and the Bees”. So far the birds are doing well but the cell phones may be killing off the honeybees and get this, male fertility!  Then again, how many times have we heard that they can cause brain tumors? However, two separate  post are making the claims of cellular damage.  The first regarding an insect vital to our agriculture, from PhysOrg.com, I quote:

In his experiment, Favre placed two cell phones inside a bee hive and set up equipment to record the sounds of the bees when the phones were off, in stand-by mode, and active in a phone call. After the phones had been on for about 20 – 40 minutes, the bees began to make a high pitched squeaking sound known as “piping.” This sound is usually a single made by the bees to announce swarming or that the hive is in danger. However, even after the phone signals running for 20 hours and the “piping” sound continuing, the bees did not swarm. Within only two minutes of the cell phones being turned off, the bees calmed down to their original state.

The article states that there may be a link between cell phones and colony collapse disorder or CCD whish has recently taken a toll on the Honeybee population.  Skeptics, however, are not convinced that this is conclusive.  It may show that cell phones in close proximity to a hive may alter the behavior of the colony, how many people charge their cell phones in the apiary

We started off by talking about the band, Lestat, that we closed out the previous show with.  The band recently played out live and Steve had a chance to see them.  We remind the listeners that you can find Lestat at FaceBook.

We also noticed that we were being joined by a scanner or AM radio.  At first we thought it was Jeff’s scanner but after almost a week of gremlin chasing, we narrowed it down to a patch cord acting as an AM receiver.  Once we got away from the scanner conversation, we had a nice long run of tech talk and news.  Eventually, we got back to music.

Jacob Barnet 12 year old genius tackles relativity

This kid is amazing, he taught himself algebra, geometry, triginometry, calculus and physics in a week. With an IQ of 170, Einstein need just move on over and give it up to the boy genius. He started attending Purdue at age 8 and the now 12 year old is about to leave Purdue to do astrophysics research. Pretty nice first gig eh?  While other children his age might be tackleing a paper route, Jacob Barnet seems to be topping that by light years.  The 12 year old slightly autistic genius may have advanced Einstien’s theory of relativity.  The scientists at Princeton are looking over the young man’s calculations and think he may be on to something!

Plastic Pepsi Bottles from Plants

Yes, it is true, it looks like a pop bottle, feels like a pop bottle but it is made from vegetable matter.  According to an article at phyorg.com:

“The  is made from switch grass, pine bark, corn husks and other materials. Ultimately, Pepsi plans to also use orange peels, oat hulls, potato scraps and other leftovers from its food business.

The new bottle looks, feels and protects the drink inside exactly the same as its current bottles, Papalia said. ‘It’s indistinguishable.'”

The article also states that their competior, Coke, is several years from achieving the same thing.
