Cell Phones May Cause Cancer
This is not really the freshest news, in fact, it is a tad bit of a re-run. Ironically, we mentioned findings similar to this when we recently discussed cell phone impact on bees and male fertility. Looks like we may have put our feet in our mouths… again. It seems that shortly after we jested about previous studies that claimed cell phone usage may be linked to cancer, The World Health Organization (WHO) came out and stated that there MAY be a link between cell phone usage and cancer. A CNN report stated:
Radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same “carcinogenic hazard” category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.
So should we all abandon our wireless convenience item for the old cord tangling land lines? No necessarily and maybe not even perhaps… The WHO did not conduct any additional research but reviewed previous studies. The CNN article also states that the WHO only stated that it is “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
In this author’s opinion, one should almost always take it with a grain of salt, then again, too much salt will kill you just as dead. Over the years, there have been many things that allegedly caused cancer and other illnesses. Sometimes it is true, others just a bad study or research. I think that, as pointed out by Boing! Boing!, it is important to note that the WHO list also includes pickled vegetables and coffee are also on the list. One thing for sure, even if I die from coffee, if they don’t serve it in heaven, send me right to Hades for a hot cup. Who knows, maybe cell phone warning labels will be next, they claim it works for cigarettes.
A related story at PhysOrg.com reports that despite some fear in the USA, most cell phone users feel that, in this connectivity era, they can not live and work without them. Personally, I don’t really feel that afraid. I do know that I don’t want any of you cell phone talkers to give up your borg-like modern appendage, heck how else would I hear all the details of your life. Let’s close this one out with “Talk Louder – The Cell Phone Song” by David Ippolito.
David Ippolito is perhaps better known as “That Guitar Man from Central Park”. He is known for good original music and lots of material at his website. His weekly summer concerts started as an impromptu thing 19 years ago, was picked up by a NYT writer and he soon developed a regular following. Currently, thousands now see him perform and it has earned him enough notoriety to merit a Wikipedia page. David still does these weekly shows, however, he now must pull a permit and HE must pay 100.00 per show. With that in mind, his CDs are available for purchase at thatguitarman.com, look in the left hand sidebar.
You can also find David Ippolito over at Mevio’s Music Alley and thatguitarman.com. You can find, friend and follow David on Twitter, Facebook (which he calls an idiot) and MySpace. His music can also be purchased at Amazon, and CD Baby.
Clickable links will be available in the show notes at indienation.fm. This post will be tagged with cancer, cell phones and David Ippolito.
