Game Designer and Author, Matt Forbeck

Okay, so what happens when you are kinda getting back into gaming, don’t know it nearly as well as your totally involved brother and you go to the best four days of gaming in Indianapolis? You end up running into an individual huge in both gaming and writing.  The only problem is you don’t even know that he is that huge and big.

Then again, I might have gotten hyper-active excited if I had even had time to read his Wikipedia entry:

… Forbeck has worked full-time on games and fiction since graduating from college. He was the editor on an adventure by Gary Gygax for New Infinities called Epic of Yarth: Necropolis. He wrote Outlaw (1991) and Western Hero (1991) for the ICE/Hero Games consortium. Forbeck and Shane Hensley formed Pinnacle Entertainment Group to publish Deadlands. Forbeck spent four years as the president of Pinnacle and two years as the director of the adventure games division at Human Head Studios.  … Forbeck has designed collectible card games, roleplaying games, miniatures games, and board games, and he has written short fiction, comic books, and novels for the companies Wizards of the Coast, Games Workshop, TSR, Decipher, White Wolf, Pinnacle, Green Ronin, AEG, Reaper Miniatures, Image Comics, WildStorm Productions, Idea + Design Works, and many others.

Forbeck has won Origins Awards for Best Roleplaying Game for Deadlands and The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game, Best Miniatures Rules for Warzone and The Great Rail Wars, Best Roleplaying Adventure for Independence Day, Best Fantasy Board Game for Genestealer, and Best Short Story for “Prometheus Unwound” from The Book of All Flesh….

While that is still a good number of words, I did truncate the quote and only quoted game related information.  The wiki then continues on about all his writings.  I was clueless about how successful he was when I met him at the event. You get to meet a bit of everyone at Gen Con. I was in the right place and the right time to catch Matt Forbeck at the author’s area signing books and giving interviews. He was good enough give us his time.  Listen in as we talk about:

  • His background
  • The free ebook he was doing which used Gen Con as the setting, the first of a trilogy
  • How much he writes, high volume
  • His method for writing
  • His thoughts on writing daily
  • An 11 thousand word day, 80 thousand words in 14 days, normally 5 thousand a day
  • An unforeseen deadline
  • His gaming background
  • What he has published in his effort to “run past the edge of the treadmill”
  • Where to find him online
  • His favorite book about writing
  • His advice for being successful in gaming and writing
