While we have heard much about the greatness of David Bowie since his passing  there are still others around doing great work. Iggy Pop and Josh Homme are among them. Sadly, the Star Man may no longer with us, he is, in a sense, still here. He was not only a terrific performer but served as a mentor and inspiration to many musicians. I am pleased to see some new work by a musician who once stated “He resurrected me” in an interview when he referred to the late artist.

After the break, check out this performance of a new track from Iggy Pop and Josh Homme.

Diamonds & Demons by Paul Maged

Hard, Edgy and Strong

Paul Maged - Diamonds & Demons

Paul Maged – Diamonds & Demons

If you like hard-driving rock with edgy lyrics and an attitude, you are going to love Diamonds & Demons, the sophomore work of Paul Maged. The release date is 23 September.  The seventeen track work is less than a minute from what will be one hour of good listening.  It is an awesome sophomore showing for this artist.   I guarantee you that you shall find more than one track to fall in love with.  I am also certain, you will have a very hard time picking a favorite track.  The album will give you an hour of great listening.

I will also insert my warning to the listeners here.  Not all of his material would be considered safe for work.  There are some explicit lyrics.  Considering the hefty subject material he covers I am not surprised and don’t feel that the language is in any way inappropriate.

The 7 song collection runs a total of 25:10.  It is officially released today.  If I have anything bad to say about it is that it is only 25 minutes long.   The artwork and the liner notes are very nice.  It is nice to see that some artists still provide the consumer with something more physical. I am going to do something I don’t normally do.  I am going to give you my take on each track.  Frankly, they are all that good. Let us start with the tracks and a little bit about each:

  • I am not so sure I agree but quoting the article, ““Our findings suggest that sales displacement effect can be real without a promotional effect. That is, the people listening on YouTube appear to be, to some extent people who would know about this album anyway, but may not buy it because of YouTube,” the researchers conclude.”

    • The researchers estimate that for the top albums the total in lost sales because of YouTube equals roughly $1 million per year. This is a significant percentage of the label’s total revenue.

It is hard to say, however, that YouTube is hurting overall revenue, as the advertising revenue it receives from Google also brings in a significant sum of money.

The album kicks off with the raucous thick sounding song titled From me to you. The sound is thick, heavy and distorted accompanied by a slightly whinny well delivered lead vocals, delivering the lyrics in phrased burst working well against the driving rhythm guitar and steady drums. It is a good choice for an opening track because it leaves you anticipating the rest of this four track EP.

The Dead Good – Thirteen Polaroids

There are days when I really love my inbox.  Then there are other days where “we listen to bad music so you don’t have to” rings so loud that I hate even having to touch the emails to delete them.

Today was not one of those days, thank you Sonny for letting us know about your band and your Thirteen Polaroids EP !  This duo, self-described as a “German-Italian alternative rock duo”, formed in Los Angeles has a really solid début EP.

Buckcherry to Release Confessions on February 19, 2013

Buckcherry's Confessions

Buckcherry’s Confessions

I am very thankful that Century Media, a label who has the goal of bringing you the finest metal in the world,  sent us a pre-release of Buckcherry’s new album, Confessions  And I mean really, really, really thankful.  While we tend not to push much main stream music on our station, this album is must have for your metal collection.  It is going to take dozens of listens for me to pick a favorite track.

This thirteen track album, conceptually about the Seven Deadly Sins,  is one of the best releases I have heard in years.  Kudos to the band for keeping with the signature style that we all love and simultaneously showing diversity.  Naturally, I expect Buckcherry to release quality but, in my opinion, they really stepped it up with this release.  I am not totally familiar with all six of this band’s releases but this is the best work I have ever heard from them and deserves the highest praise possible.

This album is to be released in the US and Canada on February 19.  Mark your calendar and be sure and get this album… you will not regret it.  You can check out this release by listening to the Podomatic Episode featuring the band.
