An Interview with The Great Luke Ski
The Great Luke Ski is a multi-talented man. He is energetic, entertaining, genuine and hilarious. He does stand up, music, cartoons, collects everything, is a member of The FuMP and gave us his time for an interview.
Luke Ski is Dr. Demento’s most requested artist of the 21st century. Replacing the earlier top-requested, Weird Al. He has also won Logan Awards for Snoopy the Dogg and When You Wish Upon a Death Star. He does a podcast, Bad Rapport with fellow FuMP member, Carrie Dahlby. He is a regular convention performer and this year would be his 20th performing the Gen Con in Indianapolis.

The Great Luke is a regular to many cons, according to his website:
San Diego Comic-Con, Star Wars Celebration, Dragon*Con, WorldCon, NASFIC, Creation’s 40th Anniversary Star Trek Convention, GenCon Indy, Origins, Nerdapalooza and many more. He also is the chair of the comedy music track at MarsCon in the Twin Cities (marscondementia.com).
If at all possible, I suggest you catch up with Luke Ski when he is on the road. He also often works with others such as members of the FuMP. This year at Gen Con he did a Friday Night Live show which included many other comedy musicians and had Whitney Avalon perform a few at another show he did at Gen Con this year. Of note, Whitney Avalon and Jonathan Hurley won a Logan award, Outstanding Comedy Music Video, for That Doesn’t Make Sense.
More than just another festival… FuMPFest is near!
I know many of you love The FuMP (,short for Funny Music Project). For those of you who are unaware, The FuMP is a hilarious troop of assorted comedy musicians. If you are a regular listener to Indie Nation, I am certain you have heard at least some of their music.
I am sorry that I got word of this event after the early registration deadline. However, I think it is still a steal at the regular price…. especially if you take into the account that Dr. Demento will the guest of honor. This year’s fest will be in Wheeling, IL on June 20-22 and registration is 45 dollars.
Concerts, panels and games! Seriously, how can you beat that? For more information and to register go to FuMPFest.com. I am sure that once you check out the schedule, you shall be as enticed by the event as I.
Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Indie Nation listeners, I don’t speak like a pirate very well but there are more than a few musicians who do. And we said “pirate” music not “pirated”. This stuff is all legal and podsafe. I hope that makes the RIAA choke.
You can read more about this wacky, kewl holiday over at talklikeapirate.com. I should warn you now that many a folk would not consider the first song safe for work… be warned and consider it tagged NSFW. Although the first song is about seamen, I can see why some folks might get confused.
This podcast contains material that has explicit content. It is a NSFW podcast (Not Safe For Work). If you are offended by strong language, please do not listen or download it.
Today is Friday, August 12, 2011 and it is IBM PC Day. According to thisdayintechhistory.com:
IBM originally intended this model to be a stop-gap computer that would allow them to quickly tap into the emerging home computer market while taking the time to develop a “real” PC. It was developed in under a year by a team of 12 with the goal of rapid release to market. Therefore, this team was allowed to work outside of the normal IBM development process and use whatever “off-the-shelf” components allowed for the quickest development. This overriding goal of developing something as quickly as possible had monumental unintended consequences for IBM and the computer industry as a whole that are still being felt to this day.
Fortunately, IBM was not the only one to enter the PC market. We had Atari, Commodore and Apple to create some variety and choice. While all of the competitors did not survive, we still have platform wars. Unfortunately, those “Mac vs PC” commercials are no longer with us.
Man Found Eating Human Remains
A short disturbing article at Yahoo! News
reports that police arrested a man who was, at the time of the arrest, eating a human liver. The dish was garnished with potatoes and the police were led to the man after, according to the AP article, following a trail of human body parts across Moscow. Police in the story refer to the victim as an “aquatiance” and did not know the cause of death. The remaining portion of liver was found in the man’s fridge. What no onions?
Sticking with both food and Yahoo! News it seems that some states are getting upset over what are being called “relaxation brownies”. It seems that the Lazy Cakes which display a big smiled brownie on the packaging are under attack and reportedly have even caused hospitalization of a two year old. The company states that they are labeled as an adult item. The reason these cakes make one lazy is due to the fact that they contain the unregulated dietary supplement of melat0nin, about 25 times the amount prescribed for adults, 8 milligrams of the substance in each cake. I gotta tell ya.. i just tried one and they aren’t too ba….. zzzzz
At first, an article at PhysOrg.com might have one do a double take thinking it was a dated story. The problem is it is not dated but a repeat. The Sony Play Station Network was hacked, for the third time, after being up for only a few days. Quoting the source:
This time around hackers have reset user account passwords by using their email address and date of birth.
This attack led Sony to disable the password reset page. That very fact also means that those who are currently trying to reset their password shall be unable to do so?
Can anything else go wrong for the once do no wrong electronics giant?
Rather disturbing news in from a post over at ARS Technica, well more of an update as we knew this one was coming, it seems that going after P2P and file sharing is not enough for the federal government these days. Under current law, “distribution” and “reproducing” copyrighted works are felonies. It seems that what we all commonly call “streaming” falls under the category of “public performance” and is not currently a felony.
As the article indicates, this is a fulfillment of our “IP Czar’s” agenda. It seems Victoria Espinel arrived on the job with a “wish list” regarding intellectual property. Recently Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced S. 978 with, according to Thomas, a title of “A bill to amend the criminal penalty provision for criminal infringement of a copyright, and for other purposes”. This bill intends to make “streaming” violations a felony and, if passed, violators may actually face up to 5 years in prison!
Regrettably, we can not be too specific about this legislation at this time for it seems that the actual text of the bill is not yet available. I would suggest that you contact your Senators and Representatives to see if they can get any of us a copy. Remember this is the administration that may go down as being known for being bought from you by the RIAA and MPAA. Currently the status of S. 978 is that it has been read twice and forwarded to committee. Wouldn’t it be nice if the public could read it?
Seems like a good closer for this one would be “The Creative Commons Anthem” by Rob Balder of The FuMP. You can find him and many other funny musicians at thefump.com. Rob can be found at his web site, The Fump, at Music Alley along with the rest of The FuMP, Amazon, CD Babyand i You can find Robert Balder on FaceBook, and Twitter. Links will be in the show notes and this one will be tagged S. 978. Be sure and listen to the list of podsafe musicians at the end of the song… enjoy.

This is a podcast of Jeff and I actually doing podcasts. We are each recording a separate news items. More or less, these are a few of those news stories that we could not make up.
We wish to get it out of the way immediately. This is a NSFW podcast which means it is Not Safe For Work. This podcast contains adult content and is intended for an adult audience.
First I read one that may be considered a warm up, a man, who thought he was taking a shortcut to a local park, ends up trapped in a woman’s prison. In a cute twist of irony, the town’s mayor called the police to rescue him.
Story two is what we spend the bulk of our amazement on, it is a twisted, sick, hard to believe oddity. All I will say here is that it involves a pygmy goat, one twisted male and women’s undergarments.
Then there is the music
Before we get started, this show is recorded live late Friday nights. It is not safe for work or intended for children. We spin parody music and sometimes it goes a good lunar orbit or two past any type of PG rating. So get a glass of water and swallow our disclaimer pill and let us all freak and geek out on Friday nights.
Lately, the Yippie and I have been off on a bit of Dr. Demento style mood. Who knows maybe we make midnight Friday to do just that? What else would a station indie music geeks and IRC addicts do on a Friday night? Meshelly and I talk less frequently this podcast but stick around for a longer last call than usual where we ramble on about various news articles Indie Nation covered this week.
I am also starting to add affiliate links. I know that many of you love this music, this show and these artist. Please feel free to use the links to purchase CDs and MP3s and thereby support the artists and, at the same time, help the Lumpster reduce the cost dent of all of this. As usual, we would like to remind our listeners that we find the majority of our tunage at Mevio’s Music Alley and you can get many of the tracks there for 99 cents.
OBL the musical, perhaps..
Yes the fact of the matter political news always leads to trouble! If this doesn’t get your goat (do what?), then you don’t have a funny bone.
The USA (CIA, FBI, President, Pizza Hut) reported the death Osama bin Laden (OBL for short) by US forces; Seal Team Six. In a covert operation that on the ground last just under a hour not only found OBL, but killed the the master mind terrorist behind Al Qaeda but his DNA was match, his wares were seized (computers, DVD/CD, print), body wrapped and dumped in the Ocean for a burial at Sea.
Whew. that was enough to make twitter hashtag #OBL go viral, dancing in the streets, praise Barack Obama (that’s the USA president by the way) and for the droves of conspiracy geeks to say WTF? It can take 21 days if not 21 damn months for DNA to be tested at crime scene, but yet I digress that is not the point here. The point being is what doesn’t kill you makes you laugh, and with that The Fump has released their latest insult to the left wingers, with Superpowers Go Ballistic Execute Bin Laden [Again]
