A Kickstarter to Keep Nickelback Out of London

POSTED ON October 6th  - POSTED IN Community, Entertainment, music, news, Opinion

The Don’t Let Nickel Back Campaign

When I first scanned the headline in my feed reader, I thought the Fact Magazine article was a misprint.  Then again, I hear many complain about Nickelback, on a podcast I recently heard them dubbed “the worst successful band ever”.  Personally, I think they are okay.  However, Craig Mandell does not want these Canadians to play in London.

He has started a Kickstarter project called “Don’t Let Nickel Back“.  The tiers are :

  • 1 dollar and he sends an email to their management on your behalf – 12 are claimed
  • 5 dollars and he sends a slightly stronger email – 7 claimed
  • 10 dollars for a “slightly explicit” email – 3 claimed
  • 50 dollars for an email with a mp3 of their music attached so that “the band will hear their own music, and likely retire immediately” – 0 claimed

The campaign has 27 days to reach its 1000 dollar goal and has raised 87 dollars from 18 backers.  While I like the creativity  and some of the cute lines in the tiers, I have to wonder why not simply boycott the band and not spend any money?

Mathew Rivaldi of Wiggity Bang Games

350px-gen_con_logo-svgMathew Rivaldi is the  president of Wiggity Bang Games and he was nice enough to sit down with me and talk about his company and it’s most recent release, Alpha Bandits. The company was also giving out print and play versions of the game.

The company has a history of award-winning games and I feel that Alpha Bandits may well make that list. While I am still too far behind on interviews to have played it yet. I can tell you from watching others play it at the Con, it is a really entertaining board game. Listen in as we talk about:

  • The company history
  • Alpha Bandits, a devious word game
  • Their competition at the Con
  • How to pre-order their Kickstarter funded game, Alpha Bandits
  • His advice to those who wish to create a game

You can find Wiggity Bang Games on the web at:

Gateway Games to Introduce Your Non-Gaming Friends to Gaming – Calliope Games

Calliope Games

Calliope Games

I was lucky enough to catch the president of Calliope Games at the 2014 Gen Con.  Calliope Games are “gateway” games.  A game is to introduce non-gamers to gaming as a hobby.  This means they are low-cost with all titles under 30 USD and have short play times with most games being played in under 30 minutes.  They also appeal to a wide age group.

The company was part of the “family fun pavilion” area of Gen Con; an area designed for games to target the entire family.  They were also one of fifty companies participating in this year’s Cheese Weasel ConQuest.

Gen Con 2014

Gen Con 2014

If you have never been to a Gen Con, Lumpy will spend almost one-quarter of the show playing some of the artists who performed there and talking about his experience. Lumpy had never attended a Gen Con before. There are a few things he knows for sure:

  • He had a great time
  • He got many interviews
  • He learned much
  • He has every intention of returning in 2015

We opened the show with a few tracks from some of the artists who were at Gen Con:

Both of the artists above are members of The FuMP.   Thanks to Through Gamer Goggles Lumpy got to attend Gen Con and that is what this edited news edition is all about:

Today’s show features the music of The Griswolds. We opened with Mississippi and Heart of a Lion. We liked their down under sound so much we decided to also end the show with Red Tuxedo. Links for the band are at the end of the show notes.

Remember the days of youth when you wished you could fly a Veritech fighter?  I do.  Thanks to Ninja Division we have a Robotech Kickstarter.  It only took them about six hours to meet the goal of 70,000
