Still catching up on the inbox after so much time away. I have another gem to share today. Carolyn Marie is a pop powerhouse serving up excellent music and videos. She is also a very talented dancer and choreographer. Additionally, she is in touch with e-media via her zine.

First, I shall let this musician introduce himself. From his bio on BandCamp:
“Pseudonym is a band consisting of me, Paul Desjarlais, and other real or imaginary people. Back in Boston a long time ago I used to play bass for The Uncalled Four, and then for Haberland. After that I released a cassette album called Pabz, and later a CD called Pig Tail World. Now I live in San Francisco and I record songs when I get a chance and sometimes post albums online.”
With so many out there with a synthesizer, drum machine, minimal skills, and a computer self-proclaimed a DIY musician, it is a tag line here at Indie Nation… “We listen to bad music so you don’t have to”. Pseudonym is a welcome exception.
Louise Aubrie Late44
This artist splits her time between London and New York. Louise Aubrie pumps out powerful pop with a healthy dose of rock and punk. Her latest release, Late 44 is an excellent ten-track release. Every song entertains from start to finish. Produced at Abbey Road Studio, the producers and the musicians totally clicked to create an amazing sounding work… Superbly done! I honestly can find nothing bad to say about this release. I love it!
The music is packed with powerful guitar and vocals. While all the musicians performed awesome on this album, moving perfectly as one, I was drawn to the guitar work and vocals. They are superb. Check out how well she uses her dynamic and powerful voice, like an extra instrument at times, on Next to Nothing. The punkish guitar riffs on Winter Dolour. The nice crunchy guitar on Tearjerker. Seriously folks, every track on this release is a treat.
From Columbus, Ohio – The Slang
There is much to like about this band from Columbus, Ohio. To start with, I feel The Slang is a great name for a band. I also really like the EP cover. Stuff like that, however, does not make a band good or bad.
The band is the work of John Bobo, who is the songwriter, plays several instruments and vocalist, and John Newsome is the bassist. They are currently touring their EP with additional members Matt Thiedt on guitars and keys and Michael Dillon on drums.
Musically, this alternative/power pop band has a sound reminiscent of the late 90’s; energetic, loud but not noisy, and a wall of sound. I am not 100% certain but I believe it was also a requirement of the 90s that every song had a keyboard in it. Furthermore, in that era, 9 out of 10 bands and radio stations were “alternative”. While I poke fun at the era, I still turn the volume up when music from it plays… admit it, you do too.
Compositionally, they don’t blow me away. In a good way, they have a typical late 90s sound. They cover that style exceptionally taking “the same old thing” and making it fresh, vibrant and alive.
Technically, the work is exceptional. It was recorded at The Cutting Room. The EP is well produced and mastered having been done by successful, seasoned engineers. (Mixed by Mark Needham, who has done work for Imagine Dragons and Tokyo Police Club, and mastered by Brian Lucey, who has done work for The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys.)
