Violent Video Game Myth

From Guys Girl :

After Columbine 13 yrs ago (Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold ravaged the school with terror, killing 13 and wounding 13 before taking their own lives) in the aftermath many people blamed violent video games.

A few things are backwards:

  • People are drawn to violent games because of personality
  • In 2008 survey, from Entertainment Software System, revealed that 97% of teens 12 -17 played video games
  • Xbox live has 35 million subscribers – What about the WII and PS systems?
  • If Video games are the cause of Teen violence there should be a lot more of it

Note that the cause of violence stems from the personality of the individual in question. Whether it be mental, environmental, or any other reason will vary from person to person. As an example, Harris was diagnosed by the FBI as a psychopath with a messianic-grade superiority complex.

Our favorite part of the article is that it was written by a Columbine graduate.

Regarding the Norway Mass-Shooting Trial Reopens Debate on Violent Video Games. From CNN
Shooter admits to using Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty for shooting practice.

The points are clearly noted in the article

  1. Lots of people that play don’t kill people.
  2. Many people who play farmville don’t farm
  3. The confessed killer had other influences like, xenophobia, fundementalist Christianity, and a right wing idealology.
  4. Many ways to train for a shooting spree.
  5. Little scientific evidence suggesting video games make people violent.
  6. WoW is apparently a cover up device.

Video game and Depression – It may Help

From Medicine.net

We didn’t get to talk about it on the air much because it is a deep article (5 pages), but I thought listeners might like to read it as a pick me up. We closed the show out with Tru Gangster by Nice Peter
